Project Description:

NumbSkulls are a generative art collection of 6,666 unique minimally designed and animated iconographic skulls. I designed and developed the collection, website, and promotional content.

Despite it being a failure as a business, I consider NumbSkulls to be my most creatively fulfilling project to date. It was a significant undertaking over the course of a year to plan, design, and build the collection — all of which was done by hand without the use of AI.

I designed hundreds of elements (or traits) in terms of creating different heads, eyes, noses, and mouth shapes. Then, I developed code that randomly combined the various shapes to form unpredictable results and unique characters from millions of possibilities. I used color as a form of rarity — so each design that features one or more colors is considered a “rare” character. Additionally, I animated various elements using CSS code that is embedded in the SVG vector file format of each animated character. Animated traits are a form of rarity in the collection as well. Also, each character has random textual traits.

Despite its silly nature, I took the project and the art very seriously. Unfortunately, I think it was overshadowed by the immature culture and volatile nature of the NFT industry at the time of its release. Despite this, my hope is that the collection will one day be rediscovered as one of the legitimate generative art collections of the of the 2021 NFT bubble. I think anybody that delves below the surface of this collection will appreciate the art and complexity of this project.
