Cocoa Beach Is Trashy

My lifelong love/hate relationship with a Florida surf town, and why I wish it was a little nicer.

I was recently driving back to Florida after an awesome week in the mountains of North Georgia with my fiance. It’s a long drive, and checking out the billboards to pass the time is a good way to lose all faith in humanity. There’s an abundance of billboards for anti-abortion, adult superstores, “spas” with trucker parking, and my personal favorite, “Hell? …Oh, I forgot about that.” It’s like Jesus and the Devil are duking it out for advertising space. Closer to the Florida state line, Cocoa Beach starts to join in the fun. Their billboards litter the road side like cigarette butts in the sand at, well… Cocoa Beach.

For the ill informed, the billboards and advertising paint Cocoa Beach as a sophisticated, tropical paradise along the Space Coast of Florida. For those of us that grew up surfing those dirty waves, we know the truth — Cocoa Beach is trashy.

If you were to hold a black light over the state of Florida, Cocoa Beach would be a shining beacon of debauchery. It’s where all the bros and sluts of the southeast congregate to abandon their last shreds of dignity on Spring Break. It’s where every trailer park rose with a tramp stamp and deadbeat dad unite because they couldn’t afford a ticket to Vegas. It’s where the cockroaches of society gather to spread STD’s and sell meth to the bums sleeping at Jetty Park.

Did I go too far?

See, once upon a time, Cocoa Beach was my paradise. I’ve blown several Publix paychecks on the casino cruises that sail from those dark shores. I’ve walked into the wrong seedy motel off A1A and seen things my sheltered eyes were not prepared to behold. I’ve had a trigger happy cop pull his gun on my friends and I while searching our Camaro for weed — unsuccessfully. I’ve been woken up and solicited for drugs while napping in my Jeep Wrangler between surf sessions. I’ve jumped off the end of the pier during a hurricane to score some major swell. I know this town, well enough.

Clearly, I did my share of contributing to the trash of Cocoa Beach in my youth. Then I grew up and ventured beyond the shores of Central Florida. When I returned many years later to the place where I learned to surf, I expected to find the paradise I remembered. Instead, I found trash. I found bags of Lay’s potato chips and styrofoam cups floating in the water, cigarette butts and crumpled beer cans lining the shores, and the kind of people that thoughtlessly added to mess. Maybe I’m the one that changed, and it was my sugar-coated teenage memories that led to my utter disappointment of Cocoa Beach. Maybe the town truly did fall deeper into a perpetual haze of Spring Break parties. I don’t know.

Sometimes I hear lore from the previous generation. Old Florida surfers like my Dad that remember the way it used to be. Ron Jon’s was no more than a little surf shack on the pier. Friendly folk would hold each other on the hoods of their cars to watch the space launches. Surfers would kindly share the waves and retrieve each others boards because surf leashes hadn’t been invented yet. The town was filled with astronauts preparing for their next mission.

Gone are those days of yesteryear. Things changed.

Mr. Ron Jon himself, hailed by some as the father of East Coast surfing and others as a reclusive criminal sell-out, has transformed his iconic little surf shop into a gaudy monstrosity of a tourist trap. Ron Jon’s only saving grace is the fading memory of its past. On the other side of the road is something worse, the Cocoa Beach Surf Company (CBSC). A former disgruntled manager of Ron Jon’s constructed the competing “surf shop” right next door in a pissing match of true Cocoa Beach form.

CBSC-logo
Worst. Surf. Logo. Ever.

I don’t know those guys. I shouldn’t pass judgement. They’re probably nice, fun-loving surfers with some awesome stories. However, I will speak to my personal expertise and say that CBSC has the worst logo in surfing history. The name doesn’t exude much creativity either. Most of this article is a jab in good fun, a roast of a town I love, but c’mon!? Have you seen that logo!? No self respecting surfer wants that poor excuse for a stick figure on their car, let alone a t-shirt. It’s like the inspiration was to make the kokopelli guy retarded with a surfboard under his arm. I could design a better surf logo blindfolded. My unborn child could design a better logo. It needs help, man. Please consider a re-branding. If not for the sake of all mankind, at least for the dignity of the company.

As for the rocket launches, those have lost their charm as well. I remember hearing the sonic boom of the shuttles while playing outside as a kid. It was a magical feeling knowing Merica was exploring space. Now, most people would rather watch an episode of “Real Housewives” than see mankind travel beyond our own planet.

And the surfers, friendly faces are few and far between in those waters. The waves below the pier are littered with aggro groms trying to become the next Kelly Slater, and kooks with their blue soft-top Costco boards crashing into each other. On the pier fishermen compete to catch surfers, or mutated 3-eyed flounders in the polluted water below.

Honestly, Cocoa Beach isn’t all bad. I may have exaggerated a tad. I’ve clearly got some gripes with it, but it’s only because I love the place. It had all the right nurturing to become a charming little beach town with a rich history of surfing and astronauts, but somewhere along the way things went wrong. Despite all its faults, Cocoa Beach still holds a place in my heart. It’s like high school, most of it was an awful experience, but somehow I still look back on it with fond memories. I’m not asking for a different town, just a better version of the existing one. How about using some of that billboard money on town beautification? You’ve got potential old friend, if you only tried. Daytona Beach has enough trash to go around. Let them carry the torch.

As for Rusty’s & Bernard Surf .. definitely a shame … but again I know the owners at that time .. the roof was falling in .. the structure of the building became unsafe & unsalvageable.. The only course of action was to tear it down and rebuild .. yes it is sad .. literally when it would rain all the kitchen staff would be rained on. They had umbrellas in the last year above the fryers… they tried the hardest to keep it going and to save the building… know your facts on Cocoa Beach before you make assumptions why things were done??

We don’t claim to be Hawaii or Maui… ??

I have been in Cocoa Beach For The last five 5 years I moved from Massachusetts I needed change because of family issues and the grief of my grandfather who was like my 2nd father and I was told since Im Brazilian Florida is the closest place to Brazil an theirs a lot of Brazilians out here an they say the same thing I say when it come to race in Florida cocoa beach.. An I only worked 3 years out the five because for two years straight I couldn’t get a job based on my race and my curly hair an my beard not only that but I was 19 years old when I first got to Cocoa beach.. I lived in a nice apartment complex an the old people were very nosy an jealous of me and my girl because we always worked 7 days week had the money for anything an had a new car, but when I did find work an the old people were obviously living off retirement an bored an was miserable everyday single day, I would come home the old people would talk so loud be ignorant an not be respectful of us… An the landlord didn’t do anything because I’m a Brazilian.. and then my car that I was letting my girl use to go to work gets stolen out of a parking garage in Cocoa beach.. an i dealt with the case for 2/3 years an nothing happened so I had to re-save to get another vehicle Florida just looked at me as a kid an the case went no where at all an being Brazilian don’t help me in America at all even though I was born here I just don’t look American… I’ve worked in many hotels around cocoa beach an Melbourne because I come from a maintenance background.. and the fact that I got let go for no reason because the didn’t want to pay me because I was making $17 is ridiculous to me the were jealous of my work ethic an that happened at the Radisson, Best Western ,An Laquinta Hotels… The job rate is is low very below average in cocoa beach if you don’t have experience in other trades then your gonna struggle because all cocoa beach has is basic jobs for highschool kids that pay 11 to 12.. which that would not make it by with rent an groceries living in cocoa beach even as a couple $12 an hour between both people won’t afford anything that you need to live a daily life comfortably… It’s insane when I had multiple jobs in maintenance in Cocoa beach an Melbourne the 80% of crew I was working with wouldn’t know how to build or fix shit an I would have to pick up the slack without a pay raise or OT… All they would do is stuff their face before an after lunch, nobody could answer a call to unclog a toilet or fix a lightbulb so that shows me how people work an grew up in Florida mind you my crew of people were in their 40s an up lol an Im in my early 20s showin up 40 year old pretty pathetic to me.. But to me nobody has the work ethic in cocoa beach everyone i see is miserable nobody wants to work but yet they want to party party party or leave work early with a lame excuse I don’t understand that logic in order to party you have to work to afford your habits smh.. Im moving back to Massachusetts I already have an apartment down in mass with job that’s gonna pay me $21 ready to go I should of never left Mass. Complete waste of 5 years of my life, even though I thought it was for the better for me mentally it obviously was not it was a learning lesson… I don’t recommend living in cocoa beach if your starting from scratch you will have a hard hill to climb you will struggle for some time…

Have to agree with much of what you said. I moved to Cocoa Beach in 1976 after my mother divorced, and we eventually moved to Cape Canaveral, then Cocoa, Key West, and Miami before I left for college. I still visit family there. But I sure miss the days when we could swim with the manatees in my grandmother’s canal. I loved watching the rockets take off with my family, a huge deal at the time, which likely fostered my love of writing SF. Whenever people asked about Cocoa Beach, I’d say, like in I Dream of Jeannie. Cocoa Beach has so much potential. Some of my best childhood memories are from there. Sadly, places do change. But they can change again. Here’s to hoping for improvements, and the people in charge will take care of the environment and the animals that make it their home.

Hum I’ve lived here 55 years , I did not run away then come back and bad mouth the place Zi grew up it was so bad here I never left for 55 years . Sounds to me your just some jackass who left and moved to comiefornia or some dirt bag place like that . Or as you mentioned you went to the mountains ? . So you take off then come back for a little visit and run your mouth downgrading the place you used to live . In the meantime the area exploded people moved in here like never before in history ,Tourists flooded the area like never before and you blame the area here for a few bags of chips on the beach. Well if you had any common sense you would know with the influx of people in mass amounts visiting they come here for two weeks and leave there trash behind on the Besch just like every where . And about Mr RonJon may he Rip there is no one named RonJon there is a Ron Diminna but there is no Jon he just felt like it sounded cool with his name when he was opening the shop . But obviously since your such a know it all you already knew it already right . All you are is just some little spoiled mamas boy who,s parents moved away and took you away from paradise and all you can do is bad mouth the place and cry and whine about missing out on growing up in a great place to grown up . Something I can tell you actually knew very little about this place which I can tell from your little story it’s just a hatefull little speech you felt like you needed to give to make this area look bad for what ever little grudge you have. You failed to mention what schools you went to here any friends you had here or any other information you had about anyone here . All you have is generality’s no details and your attempts at them seemed false you mentioned no famous surf spots and there are many other than kooks at the pier and jumping off the pier trouble is any real surfers never surfed at the pier as there were to many kooks and old men fishing the only days we went there was when the surf was so big we could not get out and had to use the escalator next to the pier to help us get out as they closed the pier long long ago to Surfers carrying boards as it’s been banned forever . They see you carrying a board on to the pier you get booted right off . . Anyone who is a half decent surfer surfs the south beach’s from south cocoa beach to the Inlet ,Roundhouse Spanish House was great ,Lums,Shark Pit , Marco Villas,Picnic Tables ,Officers club,Secret Light also know as Second Light lol and so many other local surf spots you failed to mantion not to mention Apollo Building where we Surfed there and with the GOAT Kelly back then when we would say that boys gonna make it he’s Rippin . Never heard you once say anything but generalizations and bad mouthing our Hometown which obviously is not your hometown as you know little to nothing about it and back then it was such a small town everyone knew everyone and I really do not recall your name . But I’ll get my yearbooks out and see if your in any of them. I think I already know the answer to that question ,Someone’s aparently a bad mouthing fraud
